HINGHAM, MA CEMETERIES
WITH LEAVITT GRAVESTONES AND BURIALS
Picture
Most Hingham burials are descendants of John Leavitt's sons, Israel and Josiah.

This page contains the gravestones of these Hingham cemeteries:
HIGH STREET CEMETERY
HINGHAM CEMETERY
LIBERTY PLAIN CEMETERY
ST PAUL'S CEMETERY

We made a separate page for all the Leavitts in the
HINGHAM CENTRE CEMETERY

See also the Hingham Historical Society website for more cemetery info.

John Leavitt was born 1608 in England and settled in Hingham MA in the 1630s, after first arriving in Dorchester. Since John Leavitt's descendants are more numerous, we break those branches down to his 5 sons who had families: Samuel, Israel, Moses, Josiah, and Nehemiah, and his daughters.
Most Hingham burials are descendants of John Leavitt's sons, Israel and Josiah.

Hingham Cemetery,  aka Old Ship Church Cemetery, aka First Settlers Cemetery.

This is the cemetery behind Old Ship Church on Main Street.

Note on old gravestones:  The letter U used to be used for V.  When you see "Ye" with the superscript e, it means "the".  It looks like they started changing over around 1700.  Also something like "in her 79th year" means she was 78 going on 79, since the 12 months before you turn One, you are in your first year.

For most stones, you can click to enlarge, and also view as a slideshow.

7 photos of the 2000 Leavitt Monument to our Founding Family.  by RR - 2011:
A very nice monument installed by the Utah Western Assn of Leavitt Families, but with unproven English data, and without town approval or guidance.
They placed this huge monument on top of an old Leavitt tomb; It looks like the words "Leavitt" and "Tomb" but nothing else on that huge old granite tomb cover, and the weight has broken it in half at the rear of the monument.
Not sure which Leavitts were originally buried there, but not the two first generations.
